| DETAILS | The fixtures in the main hall of Garrison Institute are great examples of early 20th century lighting using molded mica* and iron. Although the deep colors of the mica render a beautiful and warm light, people in this day and age expect higher light levels. Consequently, Aurora was asked to reconfigure the socketry to allow for more light output coming from all sides of the fixtures and to add a downlight component. Great pains were taken to eliminate any shadows and to make re-lamping as easy as possible *The mineral mica is commonly found in flakes and is known for its heat and flame resistant qualities and sparkle. It became a popular material in the American Arts and Crafts era for aesthetic and practical reasons. Each piece of mica varies depending on the mineral deposit patterns and color tones which makes it a rich and interesting material. When mica flakes are mixed in a solution of organic shellac, bent panels could be easily formed. |
