| DETAILS | Aurora undertook this 14 month long project in August 2009 which called for the restoration of 48 interior and 5 exterior fixtures as well as the replication of 2 interior and 4 exterior fixtures. The replication portion of the project was the most challenging and 2 of the fixtures in the Mayor's office had to be created from a historic photograph. Fortunately there were 'ghosts' left on the wall where the original back plates were so we were able to obtain that exact sizing and scale the rest of the fixtures from there (photo #6 is the photo we had to work from). We created shop drawings for approval showing what the replicated fixtures would look like. Additionally, 3 sets of lamp posts and lantern heads needed to be created which were cast in ductile iron, metallized, and painted. All of the Waterbury City Hall fixtures were of good quality. The majority carry Sterling Bronze Co. labels, a premier manufacturer of upscale cast and hand-chased fixtures in the early 20th century based in New York. An interesting and exciting discovery was found when we began to remove the heavy, black, tar based paint from the exterior fixtures and found they were originally nickle plated and had gold plated decorative elements which we re-plated. |
